In 2026, the United States will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims that “all men are created equal” and “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights.” These words have inspired not only generations of Americans but also millions of people around the globe yearning for dignity and freedom. How do we know the words of the Declaration are actually true? At the time of America’s Founding, the Declaration’s propositions drew support both from the Bible and from the natural philosophy (science) of the era. Unfortunately, in the decades that followed, Charles Darwin and others misused science to undermine human equality and human rights. Today, however, the discoveries of science are once again pointing to the truths announced in the Declaration.
As Discovery Institute celebrates its 35th year — and its Center for Science and Culture its 30th — we are marking the year by rallying around this founding truth. Through books, articles, and events, we aim to help Americans rediscover how science is showing that God purposefully created life and endowed each human being with reason and creativity, moral responsibility, and a soul.
